You cannot manage marketing you cannot trace to revenue

Every month, somewhere, a management meeting looks at two reports that do not talk to each other. Marketing shows clicks, impressions and cost per lead. Sales shows deals won and lost. Between the two sits a question nobody in the room can answer: which of the spend produced the revenue?

The usual response is to buy a better dashboard. But a dashboard can only visualise joins that exist, and in most funnels the join between “this campaign” and “this closed deal” was never built.

Where the thread breaks

The thread from spend to revenue snaps in predictable places:

  • At the form. The enquiry arrives by email with no record of which campaign produced it. The source dies at the first step.
  • At the re-type. Someone copies the lead into a spreadsheet or a chat thread. Whatever source data existed does not make the jump.
  • At the deal. The opportunity gets created fresh by a salesperson, unlinked to the contact marketing has been nurturing for months.

None of these are analytics problems. They are plumbing problems, and they are all fixable in the CRM layer: forms that write source data onto the contact, a rule that deals are created from contacts rather than from scratch, and one shared definition of where revenue is recorded.

What changes when the thread holds

The interesting conversation is not “did this campaign get clicks” but “this channel produces deals that close slowly at good margins; this one produces fast deals that churn”. You can only have it when the thread holds end to end.

Budget stops being defended with screenshots and starts being allocated like any other investment. Campaigns that always looked good on cost-per-lead get retired because their leads never close. Quiet channels get more money because their few leads turn into the best customers.

None of this requires more spend. It requires the joins. Build them once, and every report after that is nearly free.
